Pavlovsk

Out of all of St. Petersburg’s suburban towns, which served as Imperial residences, Pavlovsk was the last one to appear. The vast land of Pavlovsk was given as a present to Paul I from his mother Catherine II on the birth of his son, the future Emperor Alexander I. The creation of the palace and its park, situated on the winding banks of the river Slavyanka, took 50 years to complete. Pavlovsk park is known as the most beautiful landscape park in Europe, a fine example of traditional English landscape gardening. Poetic and endlessly diverse, it corresponds to the words of the French writer Saint-Moret: ‘to all tastes and to all states of the soul’. ‘Each new step brings a new picture to the eyes’ was how Russian poet Vasily Zhukovsky described a walk through the park.

Peterhof

Built in the very beginning of the XVIII century by Peter I, not very far from the Northern capital- St. Petersburg, Peterhof was designed to be the most lavish summer Imperial residence. According to Peter the Great’s vision, the palace had to be, on one hand, an equivalent of other famous European royal residences and, on the other, it had to serve as a celebration of the successful end of the Swedish war and claim to access to the Baltic Sea. Nowadays Peterhof houses the world’s largest fountain and cascade complex. Symmetry and regularity are cleverly combined with the natural relief of the area to create what is a remarkable palace and park ensemble, surpassing the French Versailles in its splendour. As part of the complex you will find many fountains, small pavilions and palaces and parks.

The Romanov family ran the Russian empire for over 300 year up till 1917 when their rule came to an abrupt end. Periods of reform were followed by stagnation; uprisings, repression and wars were followed by more peaceful times. We will take you on a walking tour where you will see the Winter Palace (nowadays the mail building of the Hermitage), the Anichkov Palace and the Mikhailovsky Castle (built by Pavel I, hapless son of Katherine the Great). Walking past Marble Palace, our tour will end at the Peter-and-Paul Cathedral inside the Fortress with the same name where all Romanovs were buried. You will learn about the tragic end of the dynasty with a special focus of Russia's last Tsar, Nikolai II.
